The Book of Eli (Film Release)
"Eli (Denzel Washington) has been on a journey for 30 years, walking west across America after a cataclysmic war that turned the earth into a total wasteland. The world has become a lawless civilization where people must kill or be killed. The barren roads belong to gangs of cutthroats who rob and kill for water, a pair of shoes, a lighter, or just for fun. Eli is a peaceful man who only acts in self defence, and becomes a warrior with unbelievable killing skills when he is challenged. After the war and the "Big Flash", Eli was guided by a higher power to a hidden book and given the task of protecting the book and taking it to its final destination. Eli guards the book with his life, because he knows that the book is the only hope that humanity has for its future."
It's Hollywood of course, so it's everything you might guess.... overstated, sensationalist, brash, violent ... but it does have something to say about religion – specifically Christianity – so if you like American action movies, this might make a good 'conversation starter'.
Calling all Knitters
Help knit 3000 blankets by the end of 2010!
It is estimated that there are 11.6 million orphans in sub-saharan Africa. 1.4 million live in South Africa. Many of these children are AIDS orphans or have been abandoned. Many live in great poverty in shack settlements. Some head up families of their siblings together with other children and some live alone, without shelter, in hills and dumps around the cities.
While other children's charities work hard to provide food and shelter, 'Kas Care' has decided to provide warmth, and you can help. If you love crocheting and knitting for charity, you can contribute by making and sending 8"/20cm squares to help keep a cold orphan warm. The goal for 2010 is 105,000 squares (.... that's 3000 blankets!)
Send your completed squares to Knit-a-Square, Soweto Comfort Club, Private Bag X900, Bryanston 2021, South Africa

Ushaw College Vocations Podcast
The Ushaw Podcast is an exciting new project from the students of Ushaw College Seminary, for those discerning ordained ministry in the Roman Catholic Church. The Podcast will be a professional 30 minute broadcast every month. This will include interviews, vocation stories, music, news and much more. It will be available on www.ushaw.ac.uk and iTunes. We aim to provide a dynamic and interactive resource. Initially, for those in discernment, but also for anyone else who is interested in seminary life and those in formation for ordained ministry. This Podcast is not just for those diocese whose students enter Ushaw College. The focus of the Podcast is vocation and formation, and therefore should be accessible for those from all round the UK.
